There is something about a croc bag that makes you want to put on a coat, find your sunglasses and suddenly become the woman who has somewhere very important to be.

Maybe it is the glossy texture, maybe it is the old-school glamour, or maybe it is simply that croc has a way of making almost any outfit look more expensive.

Either way, I have a feeling we are about to see a lot more of it.

This autumn, the handbag is getting a little more grown-up. After years of tiny bags, novelty shapes and accessories that sometimes seemed designed more for Instagram than for carrying anything, we are moving towards bags that feel substantial, polished and timeless. Croc fits perfectly into that mood. Here are five reasons I am putting all my eggs in one basket and all my money in croc bags.

1. It makes everything look more expensive

This might be the best thing about a croc bag. You can wear the simplest outfit in the world and the bag does the work. Jeans and a sweater? Better. A black coat? Instantly more polished. A white shirt and trousers? Suddenly you look like you have an important lunch reservation.

There is something about the raised texture and slight sheen of croc that gives even the most understated outfit a sense of luxury. You do not need a logo, a complicated shape or a pile of accessories. One good croc bag can be enough.

2. The ’90s are back, and they brought their bags

Fashion has been looking back at the ’90s for a while now, and the handbag is no exception. Think sleek silhouettes, minimal styling, oversized sunglasses and the kind of bag that looks like it belongs in the hand of a woman walking very quickly through Manhattan.

Croc was made for that aesthetic. It has the polished, slightly serious glamour of the decade, but still feels fresh when paired with today's clothes. If the ’90s gave us Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her immaculate minimalism, this season is giving us the handbag version.

3. It was practically made for autumn

There are few combinations I love more than a beautiful knit and a croc bag. The softness of cashmere, wool and chunky knitwear against the polished texture of croc is exactly the kind of contrast that makes an autumn outfit interesting.

Then there are the colours. Chocolate, espresso, black, burgundy, deep green and warm neutrals all feel naturally at home in an autumn wardrobe. And unlike a delicate pale suede bag, a darker croc-effect bag feels like it can survive the realities of the season: rain, coffee runs, city streets and the occasional muddy sidewalk.

4. Croc is the new way to do texture

Autumn is always about texture, but this season I am more interested in polished texture than anything overly complicated. Croc gives a bag enough visual interest to stand out while still behaving like a neutral.

That is what makes it so easy to wear. You can carry a croc bag with a printed dress, a checked coat, denim, tailoring or head-to-toe black and it simply works. It does not ask you to build the entire outfit around it. It just makes the outfit better.

And while suede is still very much having a moment, I think croc is the sharper alternative this season. Suede feels soft and relaxed. Croc feels polished, confident and a little more glamorous.

5. The grown-up bag is back

Perhaps the biggest reason I am excited about the croc comeback is that it signals something bigger happening with handbags. We are craving bags that feel like they will actually stay in our wardrobes.

The grown-up bag is back.

Not necessarily boring, not necessarily traditional, but substantial, beautiful and made to be carried for years. Croc has always had that quality. It can look vintage without looking dated, luxurious without needing to scream about it, and classic without feeling predictable.

Maybe that is why the trend feels so right for now. Fashion has spent the last few years having fun with accessories. Now, we seem to want the really good bag again.

And if you are going to put all your eggs in one basket, it might as well be croc.
