That Girl

2/11/25

Article by Gili Biegun

There is always that girl. The one whose outfit makes sense before the season does, who knows where to have lunch before everyone else books a table, who buys the silver cutlery that ends up on everyone’s wishlist. She is always put together, organized, and articulate. She knows herself better than anyone else knows her. She is not chasing trends. She is following her own rhythm.

And then there is me…

While some things come naturally, places, color palettes, and flavors that are stamped in my mind and are unforgettably there to inspire and remember, for others, I need a guide, a reminder, a reference. A little cheat sheet to navigate through life in a more elegant way.

That Girl is my personal space, both within and outside JOYS Magazine. A place to begin exploring what it really means to be That Girl, a process that I hope will help me discover and unveil through the everyday choices of what to wear, where to go, and what to bring home.

Periodically, whenever I feel like her, I will share moments from this process: an outfit I have finally managed to style correctly, a corner I have photographed in the perfect light, or a small realization about how I move through the world like That Girl.

As the season turns, I begin the That Girl story with a fashion edit. Since its kind of the perfect time of the year to reset, reschedule, redirect, I have been going through my own kind of edit, not just in my wardrobe, but also in my lifestyle. I am clearing out what no longer feels like me and keeping only what I truly love. The pieces that hold, in some way, a sense of self.

I guess that being That Girl is more of a state of mind and a way of being, rather than what to wear, but filtering my clothes racks got me the sense of better controlling the seasonal mess created by caving to social pressure under one too many summer cocktails.

It is less about minimalism and more about honesty, knowing what I reach for every day and why. This first entry is about those pieces, the ones that never stay folded for long, that I wear on repeat without apology. They are the foundations of my fall. Soft knits in muted tones, wide trousers that move with ease, leather boots that already show a little life.

These are the things I keep, the ones that always feel right, no matter the trend. This is the beginning of my process to discover what That Girl really is.

The Trench

So obviously, it’s trench season. For me, it’s the time of year when I can wear almost anything including sometimes my pajamas or gym clothes under my 4XL trench, add sunglasses and pointed boots and somehow look chic.

The Maxi Leather Skirt

I own only one maxi leather skirt that I have been wearing non stop this season in countless ways. It never needs washing, matches almost anything I style it with, and is always so comfortable. Mine is by Envelope 1976 and is no longer available, but here are some other similar dreamy option.

Black stockings

Forever so chic, keeps me warm, goes with and under everything, and lets me honest, who shaves in winter?

Knee high black boots

There is something quietly powerful about a pair of knee high black boots. They anchor every outfit, from a soft knit dress to a tailored coat, and add an instant sense of structure. This season they feel essential again, sleek, unfussy, and endlessly wearable. Worn under midi skirts or over slim trousers, they give the silhouette a certain sharpness that defines fall dressing. It is not about making a statement, but about grounding one.
